UNDERSTANDING
GLP-1 WEIGHT LOSS

Learn about Semaglutide, Tirzepatide, and GLP-1 Weight Loss Options

WHAT ARE GLP-1 MEDICATIONS

GLP-1 receptor agonists are a class of medications originally developed for type 2 diabetes. They help regulate blood sugar, appetite, and metabolism — and are now FDA-approved for weight loss in people with obesity or related conditions.

Two well-known GLP-1 medications include:

  • Wegovy® (semaglutide): FDA-approved for adults with obesity or overweight and at least one weight-related health issue.

  • Zepbound™ (tirzepatide): Also approved for chronic weight management. It works on both GLP-1 and GIP pathways, which may enhance metabolic effects.

These treatments may be considered when lifestyle changes alone haven’t worked.

*Wegovy® is a registered trademark of Novo Nordisk. Zepbound™ is a trademark of Eli Lilly and Company. TrimMedix is not affiliated with or endorsed by any pharmaceutical manufacturer. All treatment decisions are made by licensed healthcare providers based on clinical need.

HOW GLP-1 MEDICATIONS
SUPPORT WEIGHT LOSS

GLP-1 and dual-action GIP/GLP-1 medications support weight loss by decreasing appetite, slowing gastric emptying, improving insulin sensitivity, and promoting better portion control while reducing food cravings. For eligible individuals, these combined effects can lead to an average weight loss of 10–20% or more when paired with a healthy lifestyle.

WHO MAY QUALIFY

GLP-1 therapy may be appropriate for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or for those with a BMI of 27 or higher who also have a weight-related condition such as obstructive sleep apnea, high blood pressure, or type 2 diabetes.

At TrimMedix, every treatment plan is personalized. A licensed healthcare provider will evaluate your medical history, health goals, and overall profile to determine the safest and most effective approach for your needs.

INSURANCE AND
TREATMENT ACCESS

TrimMedix assists eligible patients with navigating insurance and prior authorization for medications like Wegovy® or Zepbound™. We also help with appeals, coverage checks, and enrollment in manufacturer-sponsored support programs such as NovoCare® (for Wegovy®) and LillyDirect™ (for Zepbound™), when available.

If FDA-approved options are not accessible or appropriate, your provider may recommend a personalized treatment plan that could include other injectable peptide therapies, prescription appetite suppressants, hormone optimization, functional support, or compounded alternatives — depending on your medical history and goals.

SAFETY AND SIDE EFFECTS

As with any prescription medication, GLP-1-based therapies may carry potential risks and side effects. The most commonly reported include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and fatigue—particularly during the initial dose escalation phase. More serious but less common risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney problems, and thyroid tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).

GLP-1 medications are not recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of MTC or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

At TrimMedix, all risks and benefits are reviewed in detail with a licensed provider before starting treatment. Ongoing monitoring is provided to ensure your safety and comfort throughout your care.
